Hello Everyone,

I’m relatively new to 3D Slicer, and I’m exploring the best ways to perform **volume rendering** of DICOM datasets for medical visualization. I’ve successfully loaded CT scan DICOM data into 3D Slicer and applied some basic rendering, but I’m hoping to fine-tune my workflow for better results.

A few specific questions I’m struggling with:

1. **Optimal settings for volume rendering:**

- Are there recommended presets or parameters for rendering bone, soft tissue, or contrast-enhanced regions in CT scans?
- How can I balance **rendering quality** and **performance** , especially for large datasets?

1. **Adjusting transfer functions:**

- I’ve seen mentions of customizing the transfer functions for color and opacity, but I’m not entirely sure how to tweak them effectively. Are there any tutorials or examples you’d recommend for beginners?

1. **GPU Acceleration:**

- I’m using a system with a decent GPU (NVIDIA RTX), but sometimes the rendering appears slow. How can I ensure GPU acceleration is fully utilized?

1. **Exporting Rendered Images/Animations:**

- I’d like to create high-quality rendered images or short videos from my volume-rendered scans. What’s the best way to do this while preserving the quality?

Any [qlik](https://www.igmguru.com/data-science-bi/qlik-sense-training) tips, step-by-step guides, or references to documentation would be greatly appreciated. I want to ensure I’m using 3D Slicer to its fullest potential for medical imaging purposes.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Nowadays I would use automatic segmentation and Colorize Volume module (in Sandbox extension). No change that classic volume rendering would even come close to it. See a few examples here: [VTK multivolume/cinematic volume rendering - #25 by lassoan](https://discourse.slicer.org/t/vtk-multivolume-cinematic-volume-rendering/31981/25)

If you only want to show bones and contrasted vessels and other structures then volume rendering may look nice without much effort, just be enabling ambient shadows - see [Improve ambient occlusion in volume rendering - #6 by lassoan](https://discourse.slicer.org/t/improve-ambient-occlusion-in-volume-rendering/33590/6)

Rendering in GPU is really fast (can be hundreds of FPS on a good desktop GPU). What is the exact GPU model? Laptop or desktop?

You can use “Screen capture” module in Slicer core and there are additional animator modules in SlicerMorph extension.
