# Crashing with some data

Hi. I am working on Windows 11 and experiencing regular crashes with 3D Slicer. It is happing with data I have used in the past with no problem. I switched to my Mac lap top, same 3D slicer version (5.8.1), same data and experienced no crashes. The lap top is not sufficient for the work I need to do so need to fix the problem with the PC. Help!

To get effective help, please describe specifically what you did, what data you used, and what the log files contain.

Hi. I’m loading DICOM files / CT scans. Uploading folder approx 1 GB, 4,000 DICOM files
Switching to Volume Rendering,
Selecting the Eye button to reveal the volume.
Selecting a preset
Selecting Fit to Volume
This is when it crashes. Sometimes after Fit to Volume the item appears, but crashes when I try to work with it. For a while I had a few scans that would work, and others crashing so wondered if the problem was corrupt files. But now it is happening with all of them in all Versions of 3DSlicer I have tried. As mentioned in first post, this is not happening on the Mac lap top, just the Windows PC. Unfortunately I need to do the work on the PC. See attached for screen shots error logs. Thanks

Have you chosen to use multi-volume rendering? Does the crash occur if you choose CPU or GPU volume rendering?

Hi. See screen shot attached for the volume I am selecting. To be honest, I don’t know about multi-volume rendering, but wish I did. Also attached are some screenshots of warnings and Examination results when loading data. Definitely choosing GPU volume rendering.

I think the error log you are showing belongs to the freshly started Slicer. Maybe if you find the log for the session that crashed it will show something useful.
Alternatively you can send us the data that you use. The steps to reproduce the crash seem very simple, so there might be about the data that Slicer is not well prepared for.

Try setting “VTK CPU Ray Casting” and “VTK GPU Ray Casting” rendering in the Volume Rendering module and see if one or the other works better.

Hi
I Have tried all options for Casting, CPU, GPU and multi volume. Same result. I have also updated my NVIDIA driver, but still crashing. It seems to be something in my Windows system as this is not happening when I use the same DICOM data on the Mac laptop.
I have located previous logs and attached here.

I just sent an email reply to you regarding my problem with crashing. I attached the logs to that email, but they were blocked. I have now created a link to an iDrive folder for you to access. This is the first time I have used my iDrive back up system to share files, so please let me know if there are any problems. I did not use the advanced option so it should not require a password.

Hi Slicer
I am following up on this issue from months ago. I have been working on different project but now require 3D Slicer again.
As suggested below, I have upgraded to the latest version, and also tried the Preview release. It is still crashing. Can you tell me what I should be looking for now? These are the same files I have used before but not working now. I can open a few of them, but as soon as I do something like change the preset it crashes. Could this be an incompatibility with my Graphics Card? My card is a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER.

Skimming through the old thread my guess is that the data is too big. Did you try with the SampleData? If it’s a memory size issue you can either get (or rent) a bigger computer or resample the volume with the CropVolume module so it fits on your machine.

Hi Steve
Thanks for your email. I don’t think it could be that the data is too big as they are the same files I have used many times on this same computer with no problems. Also the computer is quite powerful (see below).
The same files work fine on my laptop (see below), but I need to be able to do this work on the Dell computer, not the laptop. Is it possible that something has changed in the Dell system that is impacting on my ability to use 3D slicer, perhaps an incompatible upgrade somewhere?

Your system has two GPUs, one integrated low-end GPU, and the RTX 2080. Make sure you configured windows to use the dedicated RTX 2080 instead of the integrated GPU. I believe windows defaults to integrated GPUs to preserve power… If you search for “windows 11 configure multi GPUs” you can find the instructions on how to set this up. The important thing though, when you are providing the path of the executable, that needs to be executable called `SlicerApp-real.exe` which is in the **bin/** folder of the installation tree, not the `Slicer.exe` that you click to launch the slicer.
Once you set this up, set the default rendering to GPU raycasting and retry.

You can also try using the MorphoCloud On-Demand instances.
