Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Craniofacial, Orthognathic & Airway Image Analysis (3D Slicer) - Shriners Children’s Chicago

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow with substantial experience using 3D Slicer and related software (Shapeworks, etc) to support research in craniofacial, orthognathic surgery, and upper airway imaging and modeling. This position focuses on advanced image segmentation, landmarking, and 3D analysis of craniofacial skeletal and airway anatomy, with direct relevance to surgical planning and outcomes research. Work is for a stable, nonprofit Children’s Hospital, and funding is secure and not NIH-dependent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform segmentation of craniofacial skeletal structures and upper airway anatomy from CT and CBCT data using 3D Slicer

  • Develop, validate, and refine craniofacial and orthognathic landmarking protocols

  • Conduct 3D morphometric, volumetric, and airway analyses pre- and post-surgery

  • Standardize and document reproducible image analysis pipelines

  • Collaborate closely with surgeon-scientists and clinical researchers, as well as biomedical engineering collaborators

  • Contribute to manuscripts, abstracts, and grant submissions

  • Develop or extend 3D Slicer workflows or Python-based modules

Required Qualifications

  • PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree (engineering, computer science, biomedical imaging, anatomy, or related fields; formal discipline is flexible)

  • Demonstrated hands-on expertise with 3D Slicer

  • Strong experience in medical image segmentation, landmarking, and 3D modeling

  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with a multidisciplinary clinical team

Preferred Qualifications

    • Prior work with craniofacial, orthognathic, dental, or airway imaging dataFamiliarity with cephalometrics, craniofacial morphometrics, or surgical outcome analysis

  • Python scripting experience within 3D Slicer

  • Background in airway modeling or sleep apnea–related imaging research

  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications in imaging or computational anatomy

Position Details

  • Full-time postdoctoral appointment

  • Start date: flexible, but as soon as January 2026 is possible
