It would be aweseom if you could contribute to development of 3D Slicer. There are some issues marked as suitable for newcomers, but if you have any specific kind of tasks you would be interested in then let us know.
Is the best way to get involved just jumping into the various issues or are there larger projects that are being worked that would be a more coherent way of developing instead of jumping from one issue to the next
There is a lot of activity around Slicer. As @lassoan mentioned the issues on the Slicer GitHub is a good place to start if you want to work on something already defined. You can get a sense of larger projects following the project weeks. Here are the last two:
