Cleaning a model

Hello! New user here, just getting my feet wet. I’m help an head and neck surgeon friend with some modeling to see if it can be used for surgical planning. I’m trying to isolate the mandible, and I’ve gotten close but I can’t get rid of the areas in red. The snipping tool isn’t working and if I try to add those areas to background it removes areas from the entire mandible. I’d appreciate any input, thanks!

you can definitely use the scissors tool for that. Or if you are ambitious you could try using the nnInteractive extension, which is very powerful for this kind of segmentation task.

If you are planning a fibula flap mandible reconstruction consider using BoneReconstructionPlanner

Hi, welcome to Slicer!

What you’re running into is common with mandible segmentation, the maxilla gets included because of similar bone density, and removing it cleanly without affecting the mandible takes some specific technique.

The Scissors tool can work but needs careful positioning in 3D space. The issue with adding those red areas to background is that it affects the entire segmentation globally, which is why you’re losing mandible parts.

For surgical planning, the cleanup needs to be very precise since the surgeon will be making measurements and operative decisions based on the model.

I work as a freelancer on maxillofacial segmentation for surgical planning. If you’d like help getting clean models for your surgeon colleague, feel free to DM me.

Otherwise, happy to point you toward some approaches to try.
