Corrective osteotomy module in canine hindlimb

DoggyBone – Veterinary Corrective Osteotomy Tool

Hi everyone,

first of all, I would like to thank the Slicer community for providing such a powerful platform and for all the knowledge and support available through this forum.

I would like to introduce DoggyBone, a veterinary 3D Slicer module intended for the planning of corrective osteotomies of the femur and tibia in dogs.

The project is based on an original 3D Slicer module developed by Dr. Juliette Burg at LMU Munich as part of her doctoral research. Her original work provided tools for the measurement and analysis of femoral and tibial axes.

Building on this foundation, I have modified and expanded the module considerably. In particular, I have worked on:

  • adapting and improving the user interface and workflow,
  • extending the original bone-axis measurements into an interactive corrective osteotomy planning workflow,
  • implementing tools for planning corrections of the femur and tibia, and
  • adding functionality for the generation of patient-specific surgical guides based on the planned correction.

The additional programming and development were carried out by me with the assistance of Claude, particularly for implementing and refining the Python code.

The module is currently still under development, and I am sure there are many aspects that could be improved—both from a programming perspective and regarding integration into the usual 3D Slicer workflow.

I would therefore be very grateful for feedback, suggestions, criticism, or technical input from experienced Slicer developers and users. In particular, I would appreciate advice regarding code structure, robustness, UI design, and the implementation of the osteotomy and patient-specific guide workflow.

My aim is to develop DoggyBone into a practical and reliable open tool for veterinary orthopedic planning, while keeping it well integrated with the philosophy and existing tools of 3D Slicer.

Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to have a look at the project and for any feedback you may have.

Best regards,
Matthias
